How does these Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights solve cross eye dominance?

In essence, we force the shooter to use the correct eye. I know that sounds a bit severe but the shooter will not even be aware its happening.

1st, what do we mean by correct eye.

We are assuming our SGS-100 Fibre Optic shotgun sight is being used.

The image below shows gun mounted on Right shoulder and Right Eye + Bead + Target are all in line. The Right eye then is the correct eye.

fibre optic shotgun sights illustration

Similarly, the image below shows gun mounted on Left shoulder and Light Eye + Bead + Target are all in line. The Left eye then is the correct eye.

fibre optic shotgun sights image

This now has nothing to do with eye dominance. If you see the image below, the Sight makes it impossible to see the fibre optic from both eyes. Only the "correct" eye will see it. The correct eye is the eye nearest the shoulder the gun is mounted on.

section through fibre optic shotgun showing optic deep inside body

The fibre optic is buried deep inside the sight body. You can only see the fibre optic from the sights if you look axially into the body. The eye nearest the shoulder the gun is mounted on is the only eye that can look axially into the vent rib shotgun sight. The other eye is obscured from viewing the fibre optic by the actual body of the Sight. This is due to the interpupillary distance of the eyes which is approximately 64mm. The geometry makes it impossible.

Without this Sight, and using a conventional fibre optic sight, the fibre optic will be able to be seen from both eyes.

When we look at an object with both eyes open, you see two images. One image from each eye. The Brain ignores one of the images, it only register's the image seen by the dominant eye which is the clearest and brightest image.

The image below shows why cross eye dominance creates errors down range.

With both eyes open, and gun mounted on right shoulder and being Left eye dominant, and due to the spacing of the eyes (interpupillary distance of 64mm approx.)  a "cross over occurs" this is where the word originates when using the phrase "cross eye dominance".

shotgun sights illustration 2

So we know the right eye should be the correct eye, but the left eye here is dominant and as far as the shooters is concerned, the EYE seeing the brightest image + BEAD + TARGET are all in line. The brain's assumption is that when you pull the trigger, what is in line is what gets shot. Clearly, as shown in the above image, the gun is looking at a totally different line of sight and an error down range is the inevitability.

This is what you actually see from each eye under both gun mounted positions

It now doesn't matter if you are Left or Right eye dominant, you will only see the Fibre Optic from the correct eye. The correct eye is the eye nearest to the gun, the complete opposite happens if you mount your gun on the other shoulder! Our SGS-100 Shotgun Sight is ambidextrous!

Many shooters are aware they are cross eye dominant and to try to solve the problem by closing one eye. As mentioned earlier, this caused another massive problem. What that does is to ensure the EYE + BEAD + TARGET was all in line as it should be. Unfortunately they are now without the ability to judge distance and speed having lost the phenomenon of stereoscopic vision.

Shooting moving targets

Shooting a moving target requires you MUST HAVE these attributes:

A) The ability to judge distance,

B) The ability to judge speed.

There is only one way you can achieve both those attributes and that is to shoot with both eyes open. The error at range is considerable if you are not aware you are cross eye dominant. Assuming the Bead is 650 mm from your eye (at the end of the barrel) and your left eye is 64 mm from your right eye, that subtends an angle of error of 5.5 degrees. At a range of 30 Metres, this equates to an error of 2.9 Metres (114"). If you know you are cross eye dominant, and you want to keep your stereoscopic vision, then these Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights from CADtec3D is the answer!

How do these Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights ensure you have a good gun mount (axial alignment)?

First of all, let me show you why a standard bead does not ensure you have a good gun mount and plays no part what so ever in aiming, or aligning your Eye, Bead , Target and Gun Barrel Axis.

The Brass Bead can be seen all the time, from any angle, even when the Bead is superimposed on the Target. The condition has bean met in the image below, but the back end of the gun can be anywhere whilst the Eye, Bead and Target are aligned. The brain perceives that the barrel is looking at what the eye is looking at but clearly it is not. This is why a rifle has a front and rear Sight so the Axis of the barrel can be co aligned with you line of Sight.

Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight explanation to how it works illustration 005

This is how the SGS-100 ensures you have a good gun mount (alignment)?

The SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights works like a Front and Rear Sight, but in a single body. The fibre optic is viewed from deep inside a 5 mm diameter tube. If you view the fibre optic off axis the fibre optic can't be seen. It's a bit like a now you see it, now you don't if you are miss aligned.

the shooter sees conformation that gun is aligned correctly

If you can see the Red or Green fibre optic you know that what the disc of light is superimposed on, the axis of the shotgun barrel will be coincident with it. That's because everything is coaxial. The fibre optic is coaxial with the body of the Sight, the Sight is coaxial with the shotgun barrel.

You position your gun until you see the full circle of light from inside the body of the Sight. You are always aware of your Alignment condition ~ Re-Adjusting is instant ~ You are always in control. Knowing you are "aligned" or "misaligned" is immediately obvious to you using the SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights. There is a visual difference from perfect alignment to a small rotation (off axis rotation). Perfectly aligned shows a full circle of light. Off axis and the circle changes to an ever-diminishing ellipse (please see illustration below).

Also, as the shape changes from a circle to an ellipse, the image will get darker. The human eye can detect a mere 1% in light intensity so that attribute has been harnessed.

It is said that you don't need a rear sight on a shotgun because your eye is the rear sight! Well that works if your eye is in the correct position: (That's what is referred to as a perfect gun mount). But you will only know if your eye was in the perfect position AFTER you shoot! You can NEVER know for sure BEFORE you shoot, and then it's too late! If you have been shooting for a considerable time, only have a front bead, cross eye dominant and never consistently hit targets, this is probably the reason why.

Why won't these Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights ever fall off your vent rib?

Unlike some designs, these Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights will not fall off your vent rib. We know this an issue with many Sights available.

In the image below you will notice the screws are at an angle. This ensures the Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights are captivated on the vent rib. Many Sight designs try to put the screws against the rib at 90 degrees. This relies solely on friction to retain the Sight. In order for that to work, the screws have to dig-into the Vent Rib. As the shotgun's Vent Rib is very tough compared to the screws, the screws will never "dig-in". The result is in a short space of time, the sight will fall off. But NOT the SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights. No force is needed against the vent rib, just a slight touch and the Sight is locked in place. The 10-degree angle of the screw takes care of that. The screw lock insert (see section below) stops it vibrating loose.

Q. But what if the screw/s come loose?

We now fit every Sight with special Stainless Steel Heli-Coil Screw-Lock Inserts. These inserts have a resilient locking mechanism that grips the screw preventing it from vibrating loose due to vibration. If you decide to remove the Sight there is no need to apply thread Locker.

How does it work?

You will see from the image below that the central coil shown coloured silver has “straight” segments or “chords”. When the screw enters, these chords flex outwards creating pressure on the screw preventing it from unwinding.

Our recommended way of using these Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights

Mount your gun and hard focus on your Sight, positioning your gun until you see a full circle light. This indicates your gun is aligned. Now, do not hard focus on your Sight anymore. Hard focus on your Target, or at the distance you know the target will be. This is critical. You only need to be "AWARE" of the disc of light in your “SECONDARY” vision to know you are aligned. "BOTH EYES" must be open all the time and hard focused on, or where the target will be.

Stereoscopic vision (also known as Binocular vision) gives you the ability to judge speed and distance which is an imperative attribute to have to consistently hit moving targets. It only works when both eyes are open!

If within 30 days from purchase you are unhappy with your Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights performance for whatever reason, simply return it and we will refund your money 100% no questions asked!

No Gun smithing required to fit your Sight.
