SGS-100 fiber optic shotgun sight Functional aspects
SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight functionality:
# This Sight has 2 screws each side to securely attach Sight to vent rib.
# Fits to Vent Ribs ranging from 5.0 to 12.7mm (0.2" to 0.5") wide with No Gunsmithing required to fit.
# 1 screw releases the fibre optic so you can change fibre colour. This means you can optimise for ambient light levels and get the best contrast depending on the background conditions you will be shooting in.
This vent rib shotgun sight has been designed to withstand the recoil shock loads of a 12G Shotgun and has been successfully tested using thousands of rounds. It's Reliable, Tough and Accurate.
How does this fiber optic shotgun sight ensure you have a good gun mount?
The fibre optics (or Brass Bead's) fitted to most shotguns can be seen "all the time", from any angle, irrespective of the gun mount and don't actually play a part in ensuring your shotgun is aiming where you are looking. It can't possibly. That is why rifles have a front and rear sight so you can ensure the axis of the gun barrel, front sight and rear sight are all co-axial and "looking at the same thing", the Target!
So this fibre optic shotgun sight works like a front and rear Sight, but in a single body. The illustration below shows this principle. The fibre optic is viewed from inside a 5 mm diameter tube. If you view the fibre optic off axis it can't be seen. If you can see the fibre optic you know that what the disc of light is superimposed on, the axis of the shotgun barrel will be coincident with it. That's because everything is coaxial. The fibre optic is coaxial with the body of the Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight, the Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight is coaxial with the shotgun barrel. It's a perfect reference point.
With your Shotgun mounted, your SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight will show you when you have a perfect gun mount.
You can reposition your mount until you see the full Red or Green disc of light, depending what you choose to fit. You are always aware of your Alignment condition ~ Re-Adjusting is instant ~ You are always in control. Many people think that because a shotgun has a shot "spread", you don't have to be too accurate in order to hit a target! (which is probably why there is hardly ever a rear sight fitted), just point and shoot in the general direction, pull the trigger and job done. Well, you must have seen the reviews, that just isn't so. Knowing you are "on target" or "misaligned" is immediately obvious to you using the SGS-100 vent rib shotgun sight. There is an obvious visual difference from perfect alignment to a small off axis rotation. This is why the SGS-100 Vent Rib Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight it is so intuitive to use.
It is said that you don't need a rear sight on a shotgun because your eye is the rear sight! Well that works if your eye is in the correct position: (That's what is referred to as a perfect gun mount). BUT, you will only know if your eye was in the perfect position AFTER you shoot! You can NEVER know for sure BEFORE you shoot. If you have been shooting for a considerable time and never consistently hit targets, this is probably the reason why, although you could be cross eye dominant (more about how the SGS-100 vent rib shotgun sight solves that in a moment). It really is a game of luck! Unless of course you are using the SGS-100 vent rib shotgun sight. You know for sure that whatever the disc of light is superimposed on, the axis of the shotgun barrel is co-aligned with it. Below is an image showing you how the misalignment is seen in the Sight Picture.
The perceptible angle of 15 moa equates to 44 mm in 10 metres!
How does this fiber optic shotgun sight solve cross eye dominance?
Exactly the same principle for giving you a good gun-mount also solves cross eye dominance! When you mount your gun, you look for the colour disc of light inside the Sight Body. If your gun mount IS NOT correct you will only see a partial disc (an ellipse), or no disc at all. When it is a full disc, that is your gun mount you need to maintain. Do not look directly at the sight anymore in your PRIMARY vision. You only need to be "AWARE" of the sight picture in your SECONDARY vision. Doing this means you keep "BOTH EYES" on the Target using your primary vision, not the Sight. With both eyes open you get a monumental benefit. Stereoscopic Vision. With Stereoscopic vision you get depth and speed perception. If you are using this Sight for clay pigeon shooting these attributes are imperative to have because you are shooting a moving target at a certain speed at a certain distance. More than that, the speed and the distance is changing since the clay was launched. Now you have to do something amazing. You have to shoot "not at the clay" but at a point in space where at some time in the future the shot and the clay will coincide!
You are incredible. Your brain does the maths and does the calculation for you but there will be an error in the calculation if your gun is mounted incorrectly because there is an assumption that the axis of the gun is perfectly aligned.
All the advantages of shooting with both eyes open will disappear by closing one eye, and or if you have CROSS EYE DOMINANCE.
The SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight eliminates cross eye dominance
And this is how!
Quite simply, the SGS-100 vent rib shotgun sight will only let you see the fibre optic's disc of light from the “correct eye”. The correct eye, isn't necessarily your Dominant eye! If you mount your gun on your right shoulder, you can only be seeing the fibre optic with the “right hand eye". The fibre optic is invisible to the “left eye” because the optic it is buried inside the Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight's body. A very simple principle with an awesome outcome!
That is why the body is quit long compared to the length of the fibre optic. By the way, if you mount your gun on the left shoulder the complete opposite is true. The SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight is ambidextrous.
Why will this Sight never fall off the vent rib?
Unlike some designs, the SGS-100 fiber optic shotgun sight will not fall off your vent rib. We know this an issue with many Sights available.
In the image below, notice the screws are at an angle such that the fibre optic shotgun sight is captivated on the vent rib. Many Sight designs try to put the screws against the rib at 90 deg relying on friction which does not work as the screws have to "dig in" to work. As the vent rib is drop forged and harder than the screws, the screws will lose and the vent rib wins! The screws will never "dig in" to the vent rib. The result is, in a short space of time, if not immediately, the sight will fall off. But NOT the SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight. No force is needed against the vent rib, just a slight touch and the Sight is locked in place. The angled of the screw takes care of that.
Q. But what if the screw/s come loose?
Until now, we have supplied every Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight, with a small bottle of heavy duty Thread Locker to prevent the fasteners that secure your Sight to the vent rib coming loose. Instead, we now fit every Sight with special Stainless Steel Heli-Coil Screw-Lock Inserts. These inserts have a resilient locking mechanism that grips the screw, preventing it from vibrating loose due to the shock seen during firing. Most shooters leave there Sights permanently attached to the vent rib but if you do disassemble the Sight there is no need to re apply Thread Locker anymore!
How does it work? You will see from the image below that the central coil (shown coloured silver) has “straight” segments or “chords”. When the screw enters, these chords flex outwards creating pressure on the screw preventing it from unwinding.
We give a 3 Year Guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship as long as the SGS-100 Fibre Optic Shotgun Sight is fitted and used in accordance with the fitting and operating instructions supplied.
