3D Printing

I have owned a PRUSA i3 MK3S for several year now, and I wonder how I ever managed without it. I used to rely on outsourcing to rapid prototyping companies to manufacture jigs and fixtures from aluminium for hundreds of pounds at a time but now I just design the jig, output the .STL file to the PrusaSlicer, optimise it, send it the the Printer and in about 2 hours time, there is my drill jig or fixture waiting to be used.

3D printing isn't an exact science, it has many nuances but if you persevere like I have, you reap the rewards.

It wasn't long before I started to look into the underlying G-Code (which apparently is the same code that is used for programming CNC machines) to optimise my 3D prints. It pays to stay if possible with the same material and manufacturer (I always use PLA), because you will always be trying to optimise for different filaments and even colours of the same PLA have subtle differences in print quality. I use black PLA for everything so I have short circuited many issues right there.

The ORIGINAL PRUSA i3 MK3S is widely regarded as the best FDM (fused deposition modelling) printer there is. Its the only printer I have used so I can't compare it with any other but I can say it does everything I ever wanted from it.

  • The largest component size the 3D printer can produce is 250 x 210 x 210mm
  • Available materials: Any thermoplastic including Nylon and Polycarbonate

Here are some 3D printed parts I have designed, printed and used!

Holding fixture, all parts printed in PLA

Utility box & lid. Hinge has a roll pin pressed into the lid hinge and pivots in a clearance hole in the box hinge part. Has 2 snap locking features.

Drill jig.

Printed as shown. An LED Shotgun Sight body printed in PLA. Yes, even the threads are printed as seen. (No tapping required).
