Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights:

The benefit sight chokes make

To see the benefit sight chokes make, we have used basic geometry to illustrate what happens.

From an arbitrary eye distance from the Sight, you can see there is a 2 degrees field of view of the fibre optic.

This is with the eye centred on the Opto-Mechanical axis. At this point the fibre optic will be seen as a perfect circle, but there is much more

F.O.V. in the system.

If you move your head to the right (you are now going of axis), you will still see the fibre optic but it won't be a perfect circle anymore, it will become an ellipse.

The ellipse will get thinner and thinner until it disappears the more you move your head to the right. When you can see it no more, this is called vision cut-off.

So there is a total of 6.2 degrees to vision cut-off.

Anything other than seeing a perfect circle is effectively Parallax.

To be honest, for the most part, you would be aware that the sight picture had changed from a circle to an ellipse because the image gets darker as well (smaller image = less light) that is part of the effectiveness of this Sight.

The image below shows this effect perfectly.

If you were to be looking along the 3.1 degree line at a target, the gun would be pointing to the right by 3.1 degrees. A total miss.

If your seeing an ellipse as shown above it means your gun axis is pointing to the left but straight ahead is where the target is!

Sight chokes work exactly like Shotgun Chokes in as much as they constrict the bore.

The illustration above shows a standard Sight without any Sight chokes fitted giving a full 5mm aperture (Sight Picture).

Reducing the aperture diameter at the ocular end means greater accuracy. Obviously using smaller apertures will reduce the light seen by the eye but it does mean that on a day where there is high ambient light levels the smallest / most accurate Sight Choke can be used. All things being equal, these Sight Chokes enable you to maximise your accuracy, by choosing the Choke that works best for you depending on your own viewing resolution limits and lighting conditions on the day. On very low ambient light levels you can choose not to use any chokes and have the full 5mm Diameter of light from the fibre optic.

Below shown the 3 available Sight Choke Apertures.

Lets jump straight in and compare the smallest Choke aperture (1.5mm), with no Choke at all.

That has reduced the amount of Parallax by 1.14 degrees.

Obviously, you could go to an infinitely small aperture to remove all Parallax but you would be able to see the fibre optic. We think

we have got the balance just right.

1.14 degrees at 30 yards = an error at range of  21"  which is considerable.

If you feel you can benefit from Sight chokes, please visit our Sight choke page by clicking HERE or finding it from the accessories drop down menu at the top of the page.

PS, if you only by the Sight, it will be tapped at the ocular end ready for Sight Chokes to be added at a future data.

If you already own a CADtec3D sight and you want to add Sight chokes, check the ocular end is tapped. We only started adding the tapped hole about 2 years ago.

The 5mm bore is the perfect size to run a M6 tap down to create the thread for the choke. 10mm deep is adequate. As you will be removing the anodise add some oil or grease on the thread to protect it.

If you have any questions at all, feel free to call or email us using the contact info below. We will get back to you as soon as we can!

As these Fibre Optic Shotgun Sights enable you to shoot with both eyes open, you have the ability to perceive distance and speed due to the stereoscopic vision 2 eyes open gives you which is essential for shooting moving targets! This Shotgun Sight will be ideal for the following shotgun pursuits:

Clay Pigeon Shooting ~ Trap ~ 3-Gun ~ Multi-Gun ~ Skeet ~ FITASC ~ Wildfowling ~  DTL down the line
